In retrospect, I had to let go of the parts of myself which blocked conscious decision – making and forward movement. The resistance to let go of wounded aspects of myself played a part in keeping me where I no longer wanted to be. For example, in order to have the follow through to apply for the volunteer position while I was unemployed, I had to begin to let go of identities associated with who I thought I was supposed to be. I was not supposed to experience no response to my resume. And I surely was not supposed to be in a volunteer position at this age. Or was I?

There was something in me that knew I had to volunteer, even if at that time I didn’t fully understand why. On the surface level, it appeared as merely being prompted to volunteer in spite of not having a job. On a higher, more expansive level, I was prompted to have trust in the inner knowing that was introducing a new way of being in the world and new form of self-trust.

The fact that the intuitive prompt to volunteer spoke so loudly suggests it had already connected with the larger possibility. I just had to get out of the way and have trust to take encouraged action. If I want to move into a higher experience of myself and life, I would have to learn to be emotionally and spiritually nimble; to not be lulled back into old patterns of fear and distrust. I would also have to let go of inhibiting mental habits to become psychologically flexible to try new approaches.

Each decision, or action, offered in the intent to increasingly become a better version of yourself, helps to soften the mental rigidity which keeps you bound to old patterns, habits and perceptions. However, you shouldn’t deceive yourself by assuming the process of releasing what no longer serves you is a one-time event. It’s not. It’s a continual process which requires ongoing self-reflective inquiry of what needs to stay and what needs to go and re-choosing to be better and do better. From this place of renewed clarity – you can begin to imagine, grow, and if necessary, begin again.

It is no surprise that social media is questioning our idea of happiness. Matt Haig’s digestible way of writing about the planet’s obsession with social media, reading the news and other factors (that undoubtedly make us question our decisions, lives and encourage us to compare our lives to others), is remarkable. This book really opens up your eyes up to how far social media has come in controlling and conditioning our lives, and more importantly, how it knowingly and unknowingly jars our idea of happiness.

Haig details what it is that makes his anxiety heighten, and describes his experiences in relatable ways to make you stop and think: should I really be telling the world about my every move, when I could be enjoying it for myself? This book provides a self-help guide you didn’t even know you were looking for, or needed – and makes you really think about what to prioritise to truly make you happy, one step at a time.
