Many people wait until spring to give their home a fresh start with a deep clean, but there are plenty of benefits to deep cleaning in the winter. Winter months are cold and typically spent indoors, so why not utilize the extra time at home to deep clean? That way, when spring does roll around, your home will already be primed and fresh for the new season—and you can actually get outdoors to enjoy the warm weather since your home will already be clean. Get yourself ready for the long winter ahead with this winter deep-cleaning checklist.

Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most-used rooms in any home. People gather where the food is. Doing a major deep clean every season is crucial.

Spots not to forget:

  • Inside the oven
  • Inside cabinets and drawers
  • Silverware holder, napkin holder, salt and pepper shakers
  • Inside the refrigerator
  • Inside the microwave and the microwave plate
  • Inside any toaster, toaster oven, or other rarely deep-cleaned appliance part
  • Shelves in the pantry
  • Tops of cabinets/soffit
  • Kitchen table and chair legs
  • Heating or storage drawer underneath oven

Bathroom

The bathroom should be the room that gets cleaned the most often on a regular basis, but it should get a good deep cleaning too.

Easy-to-miss bathroom deep-cleaning essentials include:

  • Behind the toilet
  • Toilet tank
  • Faucets
  • Bathtub and/or shower drains
  • Inside medicine cabinets. Throw out expired medicine while you’re at it!
  • Underneath sink
  • Shower curtain and rod/rod hooks
  • Top of bathroom mirror or cabinets

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are most likely to collect larger amounts of clutter, so cleaning should include disposing of nonessentials.

Check out this list of deep-cleaning musts for the bedrooms in your home:

  • Under the bed. Throw out anything you don’t need or haven’t used in a year or more.
  • Closet floors, doors, door handles, and shelving
  • Behind the bed
  • Inside any dresser or side table drawers
  • Lamps, light switches, windows
  • Top of the TV
  • Underneath any area rug
  • Hooks, shelving, or any other wall hanging

Storage areas

Storage areas are easy to pile things in and forget about. Garages, attics, under-the-stairs storage, and other miscellaneous spots within a home can easily become quite dirty and go unnoticed since you may not spend significant time in these locations.

Make sure you clean these storage areas occasionally:

  • Floors
  • Walls
  • Shelving
  • Tops of buckets and boxes
  • Ladders, step stools, and other climbing equipment or tools

Living areas

These are the areas people spend the most time relaxing in, so it’s easy to see how deep cleaning can get postponed and replaced with simple surface cleanings.

Living area deep-cleaning essentials:

  • Wipe down remotes, chargers, cords, and outlet covers
  • Keep furniture clean—wash fabrics, vacuum when possible, care for your leather furniture properly
  • Wash pillow covers and throw blankets
  • Clean electronics—gaming consoles, TV’s, routers, and modems, etc.
  • Clean underneath furniture
